In The Safe Spot
mixed media, 11 x 5 x 1.5 inches
In Her Safe Spot was born from a sketch I made while working as a substitute teacher. The image is inspired by the shape of the Virgin Mary in Orthodox Christian iconography. This form has long lived in my imagination as a symbol of refuge and protection. I often envision myself enclosed within this soft, nurturing frame whenever I need comfort, and this personal sense of sanctuary became the foundation of the piece.
This piece was also inspired by Frida Kahlo’s painting My Dress Hangs There. As a woman and an immigrant, I have faced many challenges. The blue dress represents vulnerability, uncertainty, and the experience of finding your place in a new world.
The nails growing from the figure represent the light and strength that come from within. At the same time, they remind us that showing our true selves can feel risky. When our inner light shines outward, it can bring both connection and discomfort.
This piece is about seeking safety, finding strength within yourself, and having the courage to be seen.
